I define stress as keeping one's attention on ... things that make one feel bad and joy as keeping your attention on ... what makes you feel good. --Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.

The Color Yellow

We cannot help but think of the sun and the warmth and promise of bright sunshine when we think of the color YELLOW. On the physical body, yellow vibrates to the area of the Solar Plexus Chakra, the naming of which is no coincidence, I’m sure. Research has shown that yellow has an uplifting and brightening effect that is very helpful with depression. We have all heard about how sunlight deprivation can lead to a syndrome called SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and it is well-documented that geographic areas that have reduced amounts of sunshine have elevated suicide levels.

Another area of yellow that you may not be aware of is its association with the intellect. Don’t we often describe someone with a good mind as “bright?" What could be brighter than sunshine? On the other hand, let’s consider the expressions, “Yellow-bellied coward” or someone who has a “yellow streak down his back,” indicating quite a different side to yellow, and displaying that it, like every color, has its challenging aspects as well as its positive ones. Thus we can see not only the positive nature of yellow, but also what may occur when there is too much or not enough yellow in a person’s aura:

Positive Aspects of Yellow

· Sunshine, joy, happiness

· Acquired knowledge

· Intellectual fulfillment

Challenging Aspects of Yellow

· Nervous fear, nervousness

· Mental confusion, neurosis

· Anxiety

· Anticipation

If you identify with the challenging aspects of yellow, then you are in need of this color. For example, many people find that when they are feeling stressed and nervous, the B vitamin complex is very helpful. This complex is yellow in color and turns the urine a bright yellow color. In other words, on a color level, B vitamins suffuse the body with yellow, thus helping to calm anxiety, fear, and nervousness. It is truly amazing to see how Nature provides us with the balance that we need, oftentimes without our awareness!

On the other hand, a person can have an unhealthy amount of yellow in their aura, thus allowing their heads to rule their hearts and becoming disconnected from their feelings. In such cases, it is helpful to work with yellow’s color complement, violet, or green which represents the Heart Chakra and helps us stay Heart-centered.
